Mods : Shaping A Generation Exhibition, Leicester Part 1
For many of the visitors to this site, I am sure you will have visited or be aware of the Mods : Shaping A Generation Exhibition festival in Leicester. This ran from the 13th April to 30th May 2019 at the New Walk Museum. This unique project encompassed the 1960s youth sub-culture of Mod. It also celebrated the 40th anniversary of Quadrophenia. It also defined the story and included first hand accounts and artefacts of the 1960s Nottingham Mods and Leicester Mods. In addition 1960s clothing, scooters & artefacts were provided by the designer Roger K Burton. The exhibition organised and created by author Shaun Knapp of Mods: Two City Connection. As well as Joe Nixon (Co-founder of Arch Creative) and Soft Touch Arts.
Speeches – Joanna Jones (Head of Museums), Alan Fletcher, Roger K Burton and Christina Wigmore
It was an honour to receive an invitation and attend the VIP launch exhibition last Spring. It was held on the 12th April at the New Walk Museum in Leicester. Upon arriving and viewing the exhibition, all guests met downstairs in the museum. It was lovely to catch up with original 1960s Mods and friends of mine. The ever so stylish and original 1960s Continentalist Gill Evans-Catling and Stuart Catling. As well as original 1960s Dungeon Club Mods, Alan Jukes, Andy Stephenson, Ann Barry, Maurice Moore and his wife Micky Moore.
After chatting and catching up over various alcoholic beverages, all who attended were then treated to the talks given by Joanna Jones (Head of Museums) and Christina Wigmore. In addition, talks were given by Alan Fletcher original 1960s Mod and author of Quadrophenia. The stylist and costume designer Roger K Burton who provided the original clothing for Quadrophenia also gave a speech. Roger a well renowned stylist, established The Contemporary Wardrobe Collection. His company providing vintage street fashion to the fashion industry, tv and film.
Alan Fletcher – Original Leicester Mod & Author of Quadrophenia
It was a rather surreal, but very pleasant experience chatting with Alan about his submission and publication of Quadrophenia. Additionally it was also lovely to hear of some of his recollections of being an original 1960s Leicester Mod. I would never have anticipated this 35 years ago, back in 1985 when I remembered first seeing the film, on video of course. Which I still own, as with the vast majority of my 1980s Mod artefacts.
Mods : Shaping A Generation Exhibition – The Exhibition & Photo Gallery
After the speeches we all went onto attend the exhibition upstairs. It was a wonderful exhibition. The research that clearly went into the exhibition was thorough and very well laid out. A testament to the organisers and collaborators depicting the true roots of Mod in the 1960s. One which I would like to add was so unique and refreshing to see. The pictures alone speak for themselves, of the research, work, time and effort that went into the project Mods : Shaping A Generation Exhibition. In the years of attending various Mod events and functions, this certainly will be one that will be one of my most favourable and one that I will always happily remember in years to come.
