The Rimini Mod Scene Part 3 – The 1980s – Italo Adriani

Here is the next instalment of several upcoming articles that will give the reader an informative and refreshing persepective of what it was like to be an Italian Mod growing up in the 1980s.  In this following article Rimini Mod, Italo Adraini tells us about what sparked his attraction with the Mod scene. One which I know has been a continuing love affair of his, so to speak, now going on for over thirty five years. Additionally Italo tells us about some of his memorable times and events he attended and what it was like at the epicentre of being an Italian Mod male in the 1980s.

1. When did you become interested in the Mod Scene?

Italo :

I became interested in the Mod movement and style at 13 years old.  This was after my first trip to London with my sister the previous year. I became aware of the Mod scene as she read the NME, the Melody Maker and so on. Additionally from reading the usual reviews of that time that were connected with the Ska revival and the Mod revival.

The first record I bought was Glory Boys from Tower Records (when it was alive and kicking). I also was to acquire lots of 45 records from good old Kensington Market, which has now sadly gone. My first Parka was an authentic m51 from Camden Market. Those early formative years, looking back, were fantastic years. At that time, London was totally different compared to today. Carnaby Street was a Mecca for young kids. I remember that even the tiles on the floor were the original ones.

2. What aspects drew you to the Mod Scene?

Italo :

The coolness, the sharp look and  that Mod is a life philosophy not just restricted to fashion.

3. What Mod related events & clubs were prominent in your memory that you attended / Djed at?

Italo :

Apart from the usual pilgrimage on Saturday afternoon in Carnaby Street (which incidentally were rammed during those years), memorable events were a couple of BP scooter runs. Additionally Mod all-dayers and the Italian Mod rallies of that time. The Italian Mod rallies certainly being worthy of a mention because from the beginning of 1983 they always have been a prominent and growing meeting place. Often not just for Italians, but many European Mods from other countries. I began to DJ on the local scene as the SDSC (Smart Drivers Scooter Club) official DJ. I also Djayed on the scene and national rallies from 1984 until 2001.

Furthermore,  for discussing and sharing his memories of his participation in the Rimini Mod Scene in the early 80s until the early 2000s.  In the next instalment, part four of this series of chats and interview with Italo will continue. Here we will hear of some of his memorable music that he connects with his early 1980s Mod memories.
